In cross-border disputes, a surprising amount of time goes into something not very legal at all: reaching someone on the other side. The Spanish counterparty has no website, the contract number doesn't exist and emails bounce. Meanwhile, deadlines run.

Why you need the contact

  • To attempt a settlement before suing. Since April 2025, many Spanish civil proceedings require proof of a prior negotiation attempt (MASC).
  • To confirm the address for a burofax or formal notice.
  • To reach a third party: a supplier, subcontractor or expert who knows the facts.
  • To check the company exists before spending on proceedings.

Where to look

Public registers

The BORME and a nota simple from the Registro Mercantil give you directors and registered office. No phone or email, but you know who and where.

Business directories

For direct contact, IberiaData lets you search by tax ID or name and reveal email, phone or both, paying per data point. Revealed details stay in your account for the file.

Your client

Go through your client's documents: delivery notes, orders, WhatsApp messages. The manager's mobile is often in an old email.

The rule you can't skip

If the counterparty already has a lawyer, communicate through them. So the first question when you reach someone is: "Is a lawyer handling this matter for you?"

Documenting contact

  1. Call: note date, time and who you spoke to; confirm by email the same day.
  2. Email: concrete proposal, response deadline, matter reference.
  3. Burofax: if there's no answer, for verifiable proof.

Use the details only for the specific matter and record where they came from.

Frequently asked questions

Can a lawyer contact the opposing party directly in Spain?+

Yes, unless the opposing party is represented by a lawyer: in that case, Spanish professional ethics require you to go through their counsel.

How do I prove a negotiation attempt in Spain?+

With verifiable communications: burofax, email with read receipt, a dated written proposal. Confirm any phone contact in writing.
