Selling to Spanish retailers before Christmas: a B2B guide

If you're a foreign brand or wholesaler looking at Spain for the holiday season, the calendar is different from what you may be used to. Black Friday has caught on in Spain and falls on 27 November 2026, with Cyber Monday on the 30th. But the season doesn't end at Christmas. Many families give presents on 6 January, Día de Reyes, so toy, gift and fashion shops keep selling well into January. Winter sales (rebajas) traditionally start after Reyes, though under article 25 of the Retail Trade Act each retailer now chooses its own dates and duration.

That gives you a longer window than in the UK or US, but not an unlimited one.

Be realistic about November

Most Christmas stock in Spanish shops is usually ordered well before November. A new foreign supplier calling in mid-November won't replace a shop's main collection. What still gets bought is fast and low-risk:

  • Replenishment of lines that are selling out, from suppliers who can deliver within days.
  • Add-ons and impulse items for the till area.
  • Packaging and presentation: gift bags, wrapping, branded boxes.
  • Window displays and in-store visuals.
  • Small trial orders of something new, with low minimums.

If your lead time from your warehouse to Spain is three weeks, aim for the Reyes period rather than Black Friday, and treat this year as the start of the relationship for next year's campaign.

Who you're selling to

Spanish retail is still dominated by independent shops. In our directory, 68 % of businesses have 0-2 employees and half are sole traders (autónomos). There's no buyer or category manager. The owner chooses suppliers, serves customers and answers the phone, usually a mobile: 92.9 % of the business numbers in our data are mobiles.

That changes how you approach them:

  • Speak Spanish. Many shop owners are not comfortable doing business in English. A native rep, even part time, opens more doors than a polished English deck.
  • Pick a region. A list of gift shops in Valencia and Alicante is easier to work and supply than "all of Spain".
  • Check the islands. The Canary Islands are outside the EU VAT area (article 3 of the Spanish VAT Act), and so are Ceuta and Melilla. Shipping there involves customs and local taxes, so decide in advance whether you'll serve them.

The pitch

Short, concrete and tied to a date. Something like this, in Spanish:

"Hola, soy Anna, de una marca alemana de juguetes de madera. Tenemos stock en Barcelona y servimos en 48 horas. Si os interesa un pedido de prueba antes de Reyes, ¿os mando el catálogo por email o por WhatsApp?"

Call mid-morning, Monday to Wednesday. Avoid Saturdays, opening and closing times, and the busy days around Black Friday and the weeks before Christmas. A trial order of a few hundred euros is an easier yes than a full range.

Our cold-call script for Spain has more openers and objection handling, and the B2B prospecting guide covers list-building and cadence.

Payment terms Spanish retailers expect

Spain caps how long a retailer can take to pay. Under article 17 of the Retail Trade Act (Ley 7/1996), if nothing is agreed, a retailer pays within 30 days of delivery, and the supplier must state the payment date on the invoice. Fresh and perishable food is capped at 30 days, other food and consumer staples at 60. More generally, Ley 3/2004 bars agreeing B2B terms longer than 60 days.

Two practical points for a foreign supplier:

  • Plan for January cash. Goods delivered in December get paid in January, right when shops are absorbing the post-Reyes slowdown. Follow up on the due date, not two weeks after.
  • Protect first orders. Ask new customers for payment upfront or keep the first order small, and check that the business exists and who runs it before extending credit.

The rules for contacting Spanish shops

  • Companies (SL, SA) can be called about products related to their business. Introduce yourself and respect a "no".
  • Sole traders are individuals. Under Spain's 2022 Telecommunications Act you need consent or a well-documented legitimate interest, must screen against the Robinson opt-out list and record opt-outs. Many small shops are sole traders.
  • Email and WhatsApp marketing without prior consent is restricted by the LSSI, even between businesses. That's why the pitch above asks before sending the catalogue.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Christmas retail season end in Spain?+

Not on 25 December. Many Spanish families give presents on 6 January, Three Kings' Day (Reyes), so toy, gift and fashion shops keep selling until then. Winter sales usually follow, although each retailer now sets its own sale dates.

What payment terms do Spanish retailers expect?+

Under Spain's Retail Trade Act, if nothing is agreed, retailers pay within 30 days of delivery. Between businesses, terms cannot exceed 60 days, and fresh or perishable food is capped at 30 days.

Do I need to speak Spanish to sell to Spanish shops?+

For small independent shops, in practice yes. Many owners are comfortable only in Spanish (or Catalan, Basque or Galician in those regions). A Spanish-speaking rep or distributor makes a big difference.
