We analysed the 492,043 records of Spanish companies and sole traders in our directory after cleaning them. They all have one thing in common: they received a Kit Digital voucher, Spain's EU-funded SME digitalisation programme. So they are real businesses, active at some point between 2022 and 2025, with an interest in going digital. It's a highly representative sample of Spanish businesses with fewer than 50 employees.

Methodology in brief

  • Source: IberiaData's own database of Kit Digital beneficiaries (2022-2025 calls), deduplicated by tax ID.
  • Cleaning: we removed emails and phones belonging to accounting firms, agencies and operators that filed applications on companies' behalf, non-existent email domains and invalid numbers.
  • Province: from the registered postcode.
  • Size: from the programme segment (0-2, 3-9, 10-49, 50-99 and 100-249 employees).

Half are sole traders

Type Records %
Companies and other entities 246,315 50.1 %
Sole traders (autónomos) 245,728 49.9 %

If you sell to "Spanish SMEs", half your market are individuals, which matters for how you may contact them (Robinson list, legitimate interest).

Two in three have fewer than three employees

Employees Records %
0-2 335,679 68.2 %
3-9 99,899 20.3 %
10-49 54,457 11.1 %
50-99 1,308 0.3 %
100-249 700 0.1 %

Among sole traders, 92.6 % are in the 0-2 band. Companies are more varied: 44 % in the smallest band, 34 % with 3-9 and 22 % with 10-49.

How they can be reached

  • Phone: 92.9 % of numbers are mobiles. In a Spanish SME, the number that works is the owner's mobile.

  • Gmail: 38.7 %, the norm among sole traders and micro-businesses, usually the owner's own inbox.

What we cleaned (and why it matters)

We started from 535,193 unique tax IDs. Along the way we removed, among others, more than 48,000 emails from accounting firms, agencies and operators, more than 9,000 cases of the same Gmail "disguised" with dots to use it across companies, and more than 50,000 phone numbers repeated across unrelated companies. Uncleaned, a Spanish SME database takes you to accountants, not to businesses.

Takeaways for anyone selling to Spanish SMEs

  1. Think mobile. Nine in ten numbers are.
  2. Segment by size from day one. 68 % are micro-businesses.
  3. Adapt by region. In the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla you'll mostly talk to sole traders; in the Basque Country, to companies.
  4. Distrust uncleaned databases.
